Laura Schulz, Student Support Specialist for the Master of Social Work ProgramMeet Laura Schulz, a Student Support Specialist at UNE Online. At UNE Online students are our top priority, and their success is what drives each and every one of us to do what we do. We’d like to share a little bit about the people that are dedicated to making that happen every day.

What do you do at UNE Online?

I’m a Student Support Specialist working with students in our online Master of Social Work program.

Where are you from?

I grew up in New Jersey, then went to college in Massachusetts and lived in Boston. I spent 6 years in North Carolina before moving to Maine last year.

What’s your favorite dessert?

I make this scrumptious treat I like to call a blueberry bowl. It’s just a bowl filled with wild Maine blueberries, granola, peanut butter, and a bunch of other delicious ingredients.

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

Every morning is exactly the same, regardless of the day – brush teeth, drink water, make coffee. The first sip of coffee in the morning is one of my favorite moments of my day!

What’s the best professional advice you’ve received?

That I should spend my time doing what I love. If I wake up in the morning and my schedule is filled with a bunch of things I don’t want to do, then I should reevaluate what I’m doing. No sense in spending all day at a job I don’t love. If I don’t like something about my life, change it!

What’s on your desk?

Always lots of jars, cups, mugs, and bottles filled with water, coffee, tea, and smoothies. One day this summer I counted eight on my desk at once!

What’s your favorite part of what you do here?

I love my coworkers! We have an awesome big open workspace, so all of our desks are near each other. Everyone is so nice and we have lots of fun. I love sharing my day with them.

If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Probably tortilla chips and guac. I love that stuff!

What’s your favorite emoji?

Laura's favorite emojiThe crying laughing face. It’s just so applicable to almost anything.

What’s your motto?

I love this quote by Maya Angelou. “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

What’s your favorite thing about living in Maine?

Definitely all the outdoor activities – running, hiking, swimming in Sebago Lake. I started cross country skiing to survive my first Maine winter last year. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually looking forward to snow and getting back out on the trails!

Do you have a secret talent?

I can make a meal with almost anything. Just when I think I have “nothing” to make for dinner, I always figure out a way to throw together a pretty decent meal.

What’s your ideal Sunday?

A lazy morning in my pajamas with lots of coffee and my fiancé, Drew. Then we would do something active to compensate for the lazy morning – run, cross-country skiing, a boot camp or yoga class. An afternoon visiting breweries in downtown Portland is always fun, too. Then a quick trip to the grocery store before cooking dinner and relaxing at home to prepare for the week ahead!
