UNE Online’s Health Informatics master’s degree program is a 36-credit hour master’s program designed to expand your technical skill set and knowledge-base to make you a leader in the health industry. This program can be completed entirely online, with no campus visits required, and offers the flexibility busy working professionals need in order to complete a graduate degree.

Program Structure and Course Plan

The Health Informatics master’s degree can be completed in six semesters, or two full years, assuming a student takes two courses per semester. Students enrolled in this program must complete 10 required courses, including a field practicum experience as well as any two elective courses. Elective courses are designed to help students meet their educational and professional goals and students may choose to customize their degree plan or pursue one of our optional focus areas.

Focus Your Degree

Choose one of the following focus areas or opt to custom-build your Health Informatics master’s degree plan with our Individualized option. 

HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP

In this focus area students are prepared for careers in leadership positions in healthcare. Students will obtain the skills needed to be successful leaders including strategic thinking, development of initiatives, strategic planning, financial management, leadership skills and tactics, and healthcare supply chain.

HEALTH DATA ANALYTICS

This focus area prepares students for careers in data science and predictive analytics. Students will conduct a rigorous investigation of health data analytics which will include relevant skills such as: data mining and warehousing, statistical computing and visualization, predictive modeling, and machine learning.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

In this focus area students are prepared for careers in training and educational programming for healthcare technology integration. Students explore adult learning theory as it pertains to training in IT settings and master communication techniques to inform their instructional programming.

INDIVIDUALIZED

In addition to completing the 10 required courses, students will choose two elective courses across any focus areas to custom-build a curriculum that best serves a student’s future goals and provides a one of a kind educational experience.  

Health Informatics Master’s Practicum & Capstone

Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Health Informatics are required to complete one of two practical application capstone experiences in which they will take concepts in health informatics and apply them to a real-world experience. Students can undertake a work experience in a health informatics setting, called a practicum. The UNE practicum coordinator will supervise this experience. Students will also have the option to complete a project-based capstone. Many students choose to complete their capstone experience at their own workplace. In addition to integrating what students have learned, the capstone experience is an opportunity to network extensively with the informatics workforce prior to graduation.
