UNE Online Graduate Programs in Public Health at APHA 2017
APHA 2017 was a HUGE success!
This year the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting and Expo was held in Atlanta, GA and there were more than 12,000 public health professionals from around the world in attendance, including our very own UNE Online Graduate Programs in Public Health (GPPH) faculty, staff, students and alumni.
This year’s Annual Meeting theme was Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate Changes Health, which contributed to the topic of discussion in general sessions, scientific sessions, and presentations. Below, we’ve summarized a few of the sessions presented by our team at this year’s meeting.
In addition to the sessions listed below, the following GPPH adjunct faculty also presented:
- Wenjie Sun
- Arduizur (Carli) Richie-Zavaleta
- Rebekah Doyle
Dr. Titilola Balogun, MBBS, MPH, DrPH – GPPH Practicum Coordinator for UNE Online
Based on her work with youth in the juvenile justice system, Dr. Balogun’s study, titled “Detained Latino youth: a need for connection to community resources” compared detention history, mental illness and substance use of detained youth by race/ethnicity.
She demonstrated that the Latino youth in her sample had worse outcomes than other detained youth. To promote health equity, cultural differences should be considered when designing interventions for detained youth. Community asset mapping specific to mental illness and substance use prevention should be conducted in neighborhoods where they live.
Dr. Margaret Linnell, DVM, MPH, Alumna from the Graduate Programs in Public Health
Created from her MPH capstone paper, UNE GPPH alumna Dr. Margaret Linnell presented a paper on the assessment of compliance with the Compendium of Measures to Prevent Disease Associated with Animals in Public Settings at 13 petting zoos running concurrently with Maine agricultural fairs in 2016.
The outcome of this project is in furthering the One Health collaboration between the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry, who is the lead agency for auditing public health measures at animal contact venues, Maine CDC, and the venue operators.
This collaborative effort is leading to site-specific recommendations that will reduce the risk of the public becoming infected with zoonotic diseases while attending Maine agricultural fairs.
Dr. Becky Arsenault, DHA, MS, RN, FACHE – GPPH Adjunct Faculty and Advisory Committee Member at UNE Online
Our Adjunct Faculty and Advisory Committee Member Dr. Becky Arsenault, DHA, MS, RN, FACHE, presented findings from her doctoral research “Characteristics of a Health System-Sponsored Leadership Development as they relate to the Career Advancement of Physician Leaders.”
